Annual Spring Warmer Weather B&E Warning:

Vancouver - It’s approaching the time of year when the weather is warmer and people are leaving their windows and doors open as they let fresh air in, try to stay cool, or work in their yards. The Vancouver Police Department wants to remind homeowners to be vigilant about their home security as the weather gets warmer.

There have been 821 residential break-and-enters in Vancouver so far this year. The number is up 5.8% from last year and the Vancouver Police Department is hoping that homeowners stay vigilant, particularly since 31.8% of all residential break-ins show no signs of forced entry.

“Leaving your windows and doors open can give criminals a ‘window of opportunity’ to enter your home and steal from you,” says Constable Lindsey Houghton. “Thieves will look for any window or door that they might be able to use, even ones above the ground floor.”

Windows and doors should be secured and locking mechanisms installed. Here are more crime prevention tips for homeowners and business owners.

There have been 462 break-and-enters to businesses so far this year, down 1.7% from last year.

The Vancouver Police Department is asking for your assistance:

• Lock your home! Secure all windows and doors, including upper floor windows and balcony doors.

• Consider installing additional security features such as track locks on sliding doors and windows, motion sensor lights around the perimeter of the building, or an audible alarm system.

• Try to store valuables in a room other than the master bedroom, as suspects tend to search that room first.

• Be alert and call 911 to report suspicious persons or activity, including sounds of breaking glass or home alarms, and strangers peering into or walking through yards.

• Contact your local Community Policing Centre for more security advice.

• If you are reporting a crime which relates to a crime alert– inform the 911 operator.
